Saemskin

saemskin_01Saemskin has been a Darksonus regular for years, and through these years he has honed a skill for brooding sounds and rhythmic beat driven madness ala Ad Noiseam or Hands label artists. He had released Simile for Murder a 7 track soundscape which has ever since been gaining momentum, being reviewed by such sites as ReGen, Side-Line, Smother, and Heathen Harvest. Here it is, a year later, and I thought it would be good to get the thoughts of Saemskin on the past and future of this project.

KMFDM (WWIII era)

kmfdm1Two weeks ago, I would have thought that the idea of me interviewing Sascha Konietzko of KMFDM would be a funny funny joke. Two weeks later, I have conducted the interview and here are the results.

KMFDM was the first non-mainstream band I ever heard, and as a result from the impression left on me from that first track (“Ultra” off of Nihil), I delved deeper into industrial music and assorted other avant-garde art forms, and it ultimately changed the course of my life (I know that sounds more profound than it is, but “I became a rivethead keyboard player” doesn’t sound cool). The latest album by the underground sensation has proven to be one of the best albums they have ever recorded. I was given the opportunity to interview Sascha K. a couple of weeks ago and finally did it on October 3, 2003. This is the first serious interview I have ever done, and since it was my luck for the first interview I have ever done to be with one of the figureheads of industrial culture, I was nervous as shit. Here is the interview. Some editing from the original interview has been made. Read More »

C’tan Worldkiller

ctan_02C’tan Worldkiller has been a regular here at DS for ages, longer than I can remember. He is always putting out new music in massive quantities – you might expect that the quality suffers – but it does not. I would say I’ve quite enjoyed these albums I have downloaded as of late. The more I listened, the more I became interested in C’tan’s music – but with all the releases, I became overwhelmed. I thought the best way to learn about C’tan’s music was to talk to the man(?) himself. In the interest of helping everyone understand C’tan’s work, this interview ends up being a sort of FAQ for all to read.

allied1At the front of the “New Breed” movement, Allied Vision have been my favourite Artist and music project for some years now. They impressed me when I heard “Demon Sect”, and since then I bought the other two albums “Unburied” and “MMBO”.

I always liked them more than others because they took the sound of EBM and made it sound more extreme and intense than any other acts around. There are other acts similair like DISMANTLED, but Allied Vision is determined to push the musical envelope. With the imminent release of “O.S. Bandwidth”, Which I have to say is already one of my favourite albums of all time, I finally got the chance to Interview my friend Oscar Storm….

GIGGING BANDS: The New York Experience

So you’re in a band and you think you’re ready for NYC? Here’s what you can expect… According to Martin’s Atkin’s new book, “TOUR:SMART” there are anywhere from 741 to 1235 bands playing in New York City every week. As I’m writing this, on a Friday evening, there are 374 bands playing in NYC (according to http://www.going.com) and that isn’t even tapping into the plethora of shows that didn’t bother to post on the site.

Label: Chondritic Sound

(3.5/5)

One 38-minute track of ambient noise that is heavy but still somewhat quiet. It took me a while to get into this one – you need to use headphones or a really good system to hear what’s going on. Read More »

“Any Day Now”
Label: Caciocavallo

(4/5)

This is an early album from this amazingly prolific group (originally released in 1988, I currently have the 2002 reissue from Caciocavallo/Solielmoon). Legendary Pink Dots is one of those groups that can be all over the map – like all experimental artists, they try new stuff and some of it doesn’t work. This one does. It is definitely one of my favorites by the Dots. Read More »

“Ankylosaur Generator”
Label: Emerald City Debacle

(2/5)

A couple of guys wreaking havoc in an abandoned building. This is a pretty typical noise release – screaming, feedback, distortion, etc. by local (Seattle) artists.

I actually got it for the art – there are a couple of gorgeous photos front & back. I kept picking it up and looking at it every time I flipped thru the noise section at Wall of Sound. I finally just got it so I wouldn’t have to keep examining it when shopping for CDs. Read More »

“Instrinsic Difficulties”
Label: Backwards Records
Official Website
(3.5/5)

Quirky glitchy industrial. Syphilis Sauna is a ubiquitous local (Seattle) artist with a million side projects. This disc has a generous helping of fairly beat-heavy industrial/electronica. Some of the songs are prone to overuse of samples, but many are instrumental and all are pretty good. He uses a lot of digital glitch to generally good effect. Read More »
