(2.5/5)
Very (i.e. excessively) mellow ambient environments. This is a 2-disc set of tracks made by Vidna Obmana recycling (e.g. cutting up, processing, and mixing the finished works) of earlier Asmus Tietchens releases. Disc one is called Linear Writings and includes 4 long tracks recycled from Tietchens’ Linea 1+3. Disc two is called Nachtstucke Revisited and its ten tracks recycle Tietchens’ Nachtstucke.I am not familiar with the earlier source material, but other works I have heard from Tietchens tend to be fairly quiet and ambient themselves – for instance, Suchengebiete 2 is composed of filtered, layered recordings of water dripping in a metal sink in his studio.
Even if the original works had any audible edges, they did not survive in this incarnation. These compositions are all slowly shifting seas of soft tones, without any rhythmic elements to cling to. Forget about background music – you would be hard-pressed to pay attention to this disc if you tried to. It’s not unpleasant (unless you have problems with ADD), but it does not necessarily add much to your day.
Maybe I’m being overly harsh here – presumably, if you reach for a Vidna Obmana disc you want deeply ambient environments, but I tend to want at least a few solid elements in my sonic landscape.
