Oh, also, if your speakers are on this list:
http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/
you have an extremely good chance that they are accurate hi-fi speakers - more accurate than most monitors. (see "measurements" link in each model tested)

I have to warn you, the 1 number it all boils down to is not necessarily price! so your inaccurate top of the line hi-fis could exist next to your accurate midrange monitors.
And it’s true a monitor could be more durable, but that does not make it more accurate!

I completely disagree.

a) they do not sound the same, what so ever. ( I own top end stereo speakers and mid level monitors, the monitors win every time, however more important is the space that you run them in )

b) stereo speaks wont last long using the for this purpose. ( top of the line or not, you'll ruin a good set of home stereo speakers. )

"Hi-Fi speakers are not made to take abuse above typical programmed material."

any real engineer will tell you that mastering on stereo speakers is a bad idea and it wont turn out the way that you want in the long term ( once you start listen on different systems, in your car, on your head phones, in the club )

"And definitely don’t ask someone inside “the industry” because they too want to sell you speakers and keep having food on their tables."

yes, don't ask the people that spend years learning about this stuff and working with them every day, they would only lie to you to make money........ stop kidding yourself.

yes real monitors can cost allot more, however you can rent a really nice set for about 80$ a month! if your serious about your music then spend the time and money required to do it correctly.

long story short, yes you can use any speakers, or even head phones if you like, but the end result wont be the same. and no speaker will help you mix/master better if your room acoustics are bad. it all comes down to using the right tool for the right job. sure you could drive a nail into wood with a big wrench ( hell, i've done it! ), but a hammer would be better.
