The Korg Monotron is a tiny analog monosynth developed by Korg and released for around $60.00. It’s big claim to fame is having the MS-20 filter on board. The Monotron comes in at just under 5″x3″ but despite this small footprint it has a pretty vast amount of functionality. I’ve been able to squeeze some decent bass, drum and lead tones out of it. For drums it works best for kicks, toms and other strange sounds but as it has no noise generator snares are a bit weak/non-existent. It has 1 input and 1 output, both 1/8″. The output is kind of dirty but for the price point I’m not complaining and it isn’t anything a little noise reduction can’t deal with. Despite its tiny size and plastic body the Monotron seems sturdy enough and the wee knobs are solid. In the end, even if you skip over the entire oscillator sections, $60.00 for an analog non-stepping self-oscillating MS-20 filter is more than worth the price of admission.
