November Process “Newspeak”

What do you think when you think EBM? Do you think “oontz oontz oontz oontz”? Do you think the same voice singing repetitive track after repetitive track? I used to…but not anymore.

Simply put, Newspeak by November Process is the best EBM album I have ever heard…and definitely one of the better albums I’ve heard. I received a link to this album about 3 weeks ago, and I’ve been wondering exactly how I can review it without just typing “BRILLIANT” over and over again, which would destroy what little credibility I have in the industrial music world. I’ve finally decided on giving the album a track by track rundown, followed by a general commentary.

The album starts with the track “Stability”, and it is a fine way to start the album. It starts with a very Virus-esque bassline and assorted synthwork, and then the groaning “evil” vocals come in. All good, all done before, until the voice suddenly pops over to a very clean, very well sung chorus…wait a damn minute! Yes, singing that is actually “sung” instead of groaned out through distortion and flangers is quite prevalent on this album. This is probably the most “generic” track on the album, but it seems to be very dance oriented (insert traumatizing pictures of me dancing here), so we can forgive that. Read More »

The new release “I Tank U” from T.Raumschmiere, the solo project Marco Haas, screams energy. Equal parts industrial, punk, rock, hip hop and straight forward pop this release is equal parts “all over the place” and yet totally coherent. A number of guest vocalists pop in and out of the release which adds even more to the already varied textures and styles. Read More »

This is the fifth full length release from Murder by Static, the solo project from Chris Stephniewski. Not having heard any previous material from Murder by Static, it’ll be hard to compare this to prior releases but I’d think it a safe bet that anyone into instrumental noise experimentation, glitch and ambient music would find a good deal to enjoy here. Pulsing, rhythmic and often very intense.. the best moments of this release definitely occur in the sparse yet very effective quiet moments. Read More »

One 38-minute track of ambient noise that is heavy but still somewhat quiet. It took me a while to get into this one – you need to use headphones or a really good system to hear what’s going on. Read More »

This is an early album from this amazingly prolific group (originally released in 1988, I currently have the 2002 reissue from Caciocavallo/Solielmoon). Legendary Pink Dots is one of those groups that can be all over the map – like all experimental artists, they try new stuff and some of it doesn’t work. This one does. It is definitely one of my favorites by the Dots. Read More »

A couple of guys wreaking havoc in an abandoned building. This is a pretty typical noise release – screaming, feedback, distortion, etc. by local (Seattle) artists.

I actually got it for the art – there are a couple of gorgeous photos front & back. I kept picking it up and looking at it every time I flipped thru the noise section at Wall of Sound. I finally just got it so I wouldn’t have to keep examining it when shopping for CDs. Read More »

Quirky glitchy industrial. Syphilis Sauna is a ubiquitous local (Seattle) artist with a million side projects. This disc has a generous helping of fairly beat-heavy industrial/electronica. Some of the songs are prone to overuse of samples, but many are instrumental and all are pretty good. He uses a lot of digital glitch to generally good effect. Read More »

The title stands for Concussion, Inflammation, Mortality (the names of the tracks), which is a little bit odd considering the music, but oh well. The six tracks range from delicate percussive techno and glitch (somewhere in the neighborhood of autechre) to improvised experimental noise performed on his stringboard (a homemade instrument). This is some good noise. I haven’t heard a lot of Merzbow (and there’s a lot out there), but I definitely enjoy this one. It’s got 4 tracks of looped, layered, rhythmic noise. The tracks are thick with various textures of distortion and have a lot of sounds buried in the mix. Read More »

This is a kick-ass collection of trip-hop from a wide variety of groups. I don’t even remember where I got this – probably in the clearance bin of some used record store – but I will be eternally grateful I did. It ranges from beat-focused samplefests (e.g. Coldcut, Meat Beat Manifesto, Lecture on Nothing) to gorgeous, dreamy female vocals (Halou, Bugs, Honeypot, etc.). Read More »
